FOR YOU

With their gleaming white exteriors, thick walls and patchwork bricks, the buildings on Tiree are something of a talking point. Their architecture is a classic reminder of the weathered history of the Isle of Tiree, with black and white houses dotting the landscape like shining stars across the dark night sky.

However you would like to enjoy our island, whether it is from the comfort of a double bed or separated from the crisp sea air by only canvas, there is something here for you. As an island, we understand that every holiday is entirely individual – and we have a vast array of accommodation to cater for it.

From our cottages to our coastal wild camping, there will be somewhere on Tiree for you to kick your shoes off and take a break. A trip away, no matter what time of year or for how long, should be about rejuvenating and refreshing yourself. Whether that is by sitting in the opening of a tent taking in the view, listening to sausages sizzle on the stove, or getting lost in a book by a wood burning fire in a traditional black house, is up to you.

HOTEL

If you are looking for a trip away, however long, in which you can enjoy around the clock service then you might opt to stay in a hotel over self-catering. First up is the Scarinish Beach Hotel with the lovely Stoirm Restaurant, much improved under new management, with some of the best views on the island overlooking the wee harbour. There is also the long standing friendly Tiree Lodge hotel in Gott bay with a cosy bar, a restaurant with a traditional lunch and dinner menu and glorious views overlooking the ocean. If you’re looking for a friendly team who love the island and who are always on hand to help, then these hotels on Tiree are for you. Further west, there is “catered for” accommodation at Alan Stevenson House, a substantial traditional stone-built bunkhouse situated at the stunning location of Hynish pier head.  Open from April to October accommodation can be booked here.

GUEST HOUSE

Tiree has a small number of guest houses. The term guest house has many different meanings around the world, but in Scotland and especially on the Isle of Tiree it means a warm welcome, a comfy bed and a truly fantastic breakfast. Your hosts will be able to tell you all about all the experiences Tiree has to offer and tips on how to make your visit truly memorable.

Whether you’re visiting for a night or staying for a week your days will start and finish with a smile and a sense of what it means live the island life.

BLACKTOP

If hotels are not preferred holiday accommodation then what can we say about ‘Blackhouses’? The ‘home away from home’, the quintessential haven of cosiness and comfort. These squat buildings often have walls 3-5ft thick, offering a cocoon of protection from the outside world. From the first foot in the door, they wrap you in a serene bubble of silence.

The Blackhouses on the island are impossible to miss. Low lying, painted bright white and with a dark or thatched roof – they glimmer like diamonds, dotted across our rugged rolling hills and emerald green pastures. Tiree has more blackhouses than any other island in the Hebrides.

Historically, they were lived in by both humans and cattle. The very first blackhouses had no space for a fire, but as time went on chimneys were added to make them more hospitable. The design was essential for survival through Tiree winters, as thick walls and small windows would keep the worst of the weather out. Now, these very features are what keep blackhouses cool in the summer and warm and protected in the winter.

Almost all of the blackhouses on the island are now modern, and offer a homely accommodation for your holiday. If you are looking for a safe haven, a place to unwind and reset, a calm and tranquil oasis, then a blackhouse is ideal for your stay on Tiree.

SELF CATERING

There is a host of self-catering accommodation available on Tiree. There are cottages of varying sizes (All with their quirky island style that we have come to know and love).  The better self-catering accommodation on the island comes with the comforts you need to be able to make the most of your time on Tiree, including a Wi-Fi connection should you feel the need to stay in touch with the outside world.

One of the joys of self-catering cottages is that your time becomes completely your own. Lazy mornings or up and out early for the wildlife and weather, you are your own boss. Rather than being a tourist, you become a part of the very landscape that is offering you an escape. Self-catering accommodation can be a cosy getaway with the comforts of modern life but without the noise of the mainland. It is a quiet haven, an idyllic and comfortable spot that will help you get everything you want out of your time on the Isle of Tiree. And despite its small size, Tiree is surprisingly well served by food stores so there is no need to bring supplies.

CAMPING

Experience the island wild camping or from a camp site. On quiet mornings, you can step out of your tent and allow yourself a cup of tea and breakfast facing one of the most beautiful views in the UK. Cooler evenings can be spent sitting out on the beach, bathed in the golden hue of a magnificent sunset, and listening to the soft whisper of waves lapping against the shore.

Scotland’s a very forward thinking country and its Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 means for the most part, including the Isle of Tiree, you have a right to wild camp in most unenclosed land, and there is a lot of unenclosed land on Tiree. Wild camping is free, “lightweight, done in small numbers” also “for two or three nights in any one place” and “You can camp in this way wherever access rights apply.” To find out more about Scotland’s amazing forward thinking and inclusive approach to making the most of the outdoors Click Here

We believe that the natural landscape of Tiree, accompanied with its wildlife and weather, is an experience within itself and camping is a great way to immerse yourself in the island. If you’re heading to the island in your campervan to camp you can book some great spots ahead of arrival, Sunset Campsite has hook ups with the best views over Balevullin beach, and if you’re heading here for TMF then even more spaces are made available to campervans.

POD

If you prefer a roof over your head, but still want to stay in touch with the wild side of Tiree, the island offers a number of well appointed pods (Soa Cabins, Kirkapol House Eb & Flow, pods at Sunset Croft in Ballevulin to name a few), and a bothy that will sleep up to three with only basic camping facilities you’ll need sleeping bags and it is recommended that you bring camping mattresses too.

Tiree is well equipped for, and wholeheartedly welcomes, visitors. If you are coming as a couple, with a family, with pets or for a sporting holiday, there will be accommodation to suit your needs. We’re ready for anything, from a romantic getaway to a winter surf trip where wetsuit drying space is essential. Cosy, comfortable and at home is our home – so you leave the island, and you’ll already be planning your trip back.
